Serra do Rio do Rastro 
challenge for cyclists

    Associação Caminhos de Nossa Senhora CNS is organizing this tour for cyclists.

   We will travel by bed bus leaving on Thursday, January 19, 2023. On the 20th we will be in LAURO MILLER and we will go up to the viewpoint of SERRA DO RIO DO RASTRO.

   Sunday the 21st we will return to Rio de Janeiro.

    Prepare your little heart! It will be well demanded in the crossing of Serra do Rio do Rastro, the most beautiful – and challenging –  connection between the coast and the mountains of Santa Catarina. The stretch of the SC-390 itself, between Lauro Müller and the end of the mountain, in Bom Jardim da Serra – isn't even that long, it's only 25 km. But you can reserve an hour of your trip to visit it. After all, there will be 284 turns. That's right, more than 11 turns per kilometer. 

I always recommend for those who travel for the first time on the road that they prefer the uphill route. The reasons will appear as the story unfolds, but one of them I will mention right now: the difficulty follows an increasing rhythm.

Despite not being the main mountain crossing in the state, there is some truck traffic and, yes, they can interfere with the trip, putting some fear in the steepest and narrowest stretch of the highway.

     Leaving the center of Lauro Müller, the beginning is very calm. The road is already winding, but still in a pleasant way. In the distance, we see the mountains that will soon be torn apart.

After Guatá, the ascent begins and the first thing to notice is that the shoulder has gone away. This beginning is similar to any single-lane Brazilian mountain road. To the right, there is already a beautiful view. 

The “thing” catches on even when we find two snack bars in the middle of the mountains, one on each side of the track, with a difference of five hundred meters between them. The show will begin! The track narrows, walls and lampposts appear and what was asphalt becomes concrete. The next 7 km will be pure ecstasy.

The curves – often authentic elbows – spring from all sides. Left, right, left, right, first, second, first, second… Your members are very demanding. Indentations appear on the right side (another reason to climb the mountain) for rest and photos that will make your Facebook profile fill with likes. 

If a truck appears in front, know that it will not pass it. If you paint from the opposite side and at an elbow, maybe someone has to back up to move forward.
